What is an OEE calculator?
An OEE calculator helps companies to calculate the Overall Equipment Effectiveness (OEE) of their machines and production facilities. OEE is a key performance indicator in production and shows how effectively scheduled production time is utilised.
The calculation is based on three factors: availability, performance and quality. Together, they highlight where production losses occur and where there is potential for optimisation.
OEE calculation formula
OEE = Availability × Performance × Quality
Example: A machine achieves 90 per cent availability, 95 per cent performance and 98 per cent quality.
OEE = 0.90 × 0.95 × 0.98 = 83.79 per cent
With our free OEE calculator for Excel, you can analyse your production metrics in a structured way and determine the overall equipment effectiveness of your machines.
Frequently asked questions about the OEE calculator
How does an OEE calculator in Excel work?
An OEE calculator in Excel enables you to calculate Overall Equipment Effectiveness (OEE) using production data. The OEE value is determined from the key performance indicators of availability, performance and quality. An Excel template simplifies the structured calculation and helps to assess the efficiency of individual machines or production lines.
What data is required for the OEE calculation?
The OEE calculation requires the planned production time, the actual running time, the number of units produced, the ideal cycle time and the number of good parts. Using this data, availability, performance and quality can be determined and combined to calculate Overall Equipment Effectiveness.
How are availability, performance and quality calculated?
The three factors of OEE are calculated using the following formulae:
Availability = Operating time / Planned production time
Performance = (Ideal cycle time × Total number of units produced) / Operating time
Quality = Good parts / Total number of units produced
The product of these three factors gives the OEE. The factors are used as decimal values in the calculation.
What is a good OEE value?
An OEE figure of 85 per cent is often cited as a benchmark for very good Overall Equipment Effectiveness. However, the assessment depends on the industry, the production process and the specific operating conditions. More important than a general benchmark is the continuous analysis and improvement of your own OEE metrics.
Can I calculate OEE for free using Excel?
Yes, with a free OEE Excel template, you can calculate overall equipment effectiveness without any additional software. The required production data is entered into the spreadsheet and used for the OEE calculation. ProCom Automation offers a free OEE calculator as an Excel file for download.
How can I improve the OEE of my machines?
To improve OEE, the causes of production losses must be identified. These include unplanned machine downtime, reduced production speeds and scrap. By regularly analysing OEE metrics, weak points can be identified and targeted measures devised to increase production efficiency.
Record OEE automatically with Clouver
You can use the Excel calculator to calculate your OEE manually. If you wish to continuously record your machine data and monitor OEE in real time, our IIoT solution, Clouver, will help you to automatically identify downtime and production losses.
